Job Purpose

R&D Machinist

Location: Fort Wayne, IN
Shift: 7:00 AM-3:00 PM
Salary: $31.00-$37.00/hr.

 

The R&D Machinist is responsible for processing laboratory specimens and supporting fabrication activities for research and development. This role involves developing and maintaining programs, processes, and procedures to ensure specimens meet internal and external standards.

The individual will play a key role in selecting equipment, designing and building custom tooling and fixtures, and providing technical expertise for both production and specialized testing needs. This position also contributes to process improvements, operational efficiency, and long-term fabrication strategy.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Maintain 6S standards within the fabrication area
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance procedures to reduce operational risk
  • Participate in cross-functional training initiatives
  • Evaluate and select equipment for current and future fabrication needs
  • Develop CNC programs for specimen fabrication
  • Design and build custom equipment to support R&D and laboratory operations
  • Select appropriate tooling to meet specimen requirements
  • Design and develop fixtures to support laboratory and R&D activities
  • Provide technical guidance on specimen fabrication for production and specialized test requests
  • Lead and/or support projects related to fabrication processes and practices
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in fabrication processes
  • Support laboratory and fabrication expansion projects
  • Optimize fabrication processes for efficiency in time and material usage
  • Ensure laboratory workflow and scheduling requirements are met
  • Identify and implement process improvements
  • Contribute to strategic planning for future fabrication capabilities
  • Perform fabrication for standard testing of medical and industrial products
  • Establish process controls to ensure the integrity and quality of fabricated specimens

Knowledge / Skills / Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in tooling, machining, and/or fabrication
  • Journeyman Toolmaker or Machinist certification preferred
  • Strong mathematical and mechanical aptitude
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively
  • Solid understanding of computer hardware and software systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and familiarity with Minitab
  • Strong communication skills with fluency in English

The salary range for this position is $31.00-$37.00. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary will be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
